What is Artificial Intelligence?

You might have heard so much about Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning, but have you ever wondered what Artificial Intelligence is? Or how does a machine gain ability to think? And is Artificial Intelligence a threat to mankind?

In this blog post we will explain to you what exactly is Artificial Intelligence, how does it works, its implementation, its advantages and why is Artificial Intelligence referred to as a threat.

So make sure you read the entire post and while reading, if you find any doubts make sure you leave a comment in the comment section and we will solve your problem as soon as possible.

Let’s start with the contents of this post.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

What is Artificial Intelligence?

A machine without any implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) follows a set of instructions/steps to execute a certain operation.

A Machine has some great advantages like high accuracy, efficiency, speed, mobility, and low-priced.

But, the only thing that a machine/ computer lacks is intelligence, the machine couldn’t think of a smarter way to do a task, it cannot learn from its previous mistaking and solve some errors on its own.

To counter such situations, Artificial Intelligence was introduced.

Definition of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

According to Dictionary.com, The definition of Artificial Intelligence is given as,

“The branch of computer science involved with the design of computers or other programmed mechanical devices having the capacity to imitate human intelligence and thought.”

In other words, Artificial Intelligence is the branch of science where machines/computers are programmed such that they can make proper decisions when encountered with a certain problematic situation and solve the problem.

You might have watched the well-known movie named The Imitation Game (The biopic on Alan Turing), if you haven’t watched it, we highly recommend you as it is an amazing movie based on how the computers were created and a basic idea of what is AI.
Alan Turing wanted to make a computer that is capable of thinking and solving difficult problems.

Artificial Intelligence

In December 1955, Herbert Simon and Allen Newell develop the Logic Theorist, the first artificial intelligence program, which eventually would prove 38 of the first 52 theorems in Whitehead and Russell’s Principia Mathematica.

Basic Difference between Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL)

As this post is mainly focusing on Artificial Intelligence we do not enter into the depth of this topic but, here’s an overview.

Sometimes, Artificial Intelligence is mistaken same as Machine Learning or Deep Learning. But it’s wrong; there is a difference between all these terms.

Here is an image that will give you a basic idea of what are AI, ML, and DL.

Basic Difference between Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL)

You can refer it as Deep Learning is the subset of Machine Learning and Machine Learning is subset of Artificial Intelligence.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence can be classified into 3 major types they are,

  1. Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI).
  2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
  3. Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI).

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (AGI)

It is also referred to as weak AI or narrow AI, is the only type of artificial intelligence we have successfully realized to date.

This AI can perform a singular task at a time

Example – Voice Assistants, Self Driving bot, etc.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

It is also referred to as strong AI or deep AI. It has the ability to mimic the human brain. AGI can think, understand and act using its previous experiences. Researchers and Scientists haven’t achieved AGI yet.

Example – Humanoid robots

Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)

It is a hypothetical concept of AI that will not only mimic a human brain or understand human behavior but, it will surpass human intelligence and capabilities.

As currently, ASI is a hypothetical concept it has no examples. But according to our assumption, they will be more advanced humanoid robots.

How do Artificial Intelligence works?

Are you wondering that how exactly a machine can make its own decision?

It’s not that simple as it seems. An Artificial Intelligence program has to go through various processes to get a result.

There are 5 steps that an AI program goes through to get a particular or required output they are,

  • Get Data
  • Clean, Prepare and Manipulate Data
  • Train Model
  • Test Data
  • Improve

Have you ever used Voice Assistances like Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri? If yes, you have witnessed an amazing practical application of AI.

Voice assistants take input in the form of voice and this input is processed in various steps like,

  • Acoustic model
  • Pronunciation model
  • Language model

These models can be referred to as APL.

The output from APL is then decoded and converted into text format.

And then, Voice assistants fetches the required data from World Wide Web and the information is again conveyed through a digital voice.

Here is an image to show you a basic idea of how a voice assistant works.

Where is Artificial Intelligence used?

Artificial Intelligence is one of the greatest achievements in the history of computer science.

AI has brought a drastic change not only in technical fields but also in medical fields. It has a wide range of applications in many different fields.

Using AI in industries to increase productivity and safety is the prime motive in Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Currently, Artificial Intelligence is used in the following fields,

  • Virtual Assistant or Chatbots.
  • Voice Assistant
  • Self-driving cars.
  • Autonomous Flying.
  • Shopping and Fashion sites
  • Security and Surveillance
  • Sports Analytics.
  • Manufacturing and Production.
  • Medical Analysis and Health care.
  • Warehousing and Logistic Supply Chain.

In the future humanoid robots can be used for space exploration and information gathering as a human cannot sustain some dangerous conditions but machines can work fine.

Here is some of the greatest implementation of AI & ML.

Self-Driving Cars

Self-Driving Cars

The concept of Self-Driving cars was introduced in the 1920s.
The first self-sufficient and truly autonomous cars appeared in the 1980s, with Carnegie Mellon University’s Navlab and ALV projects in 1984 and Mercedes-Benz and Bundeswehr University Munich’s Eureka Prometheus Project in 1987.
Tesla Model S is considered to be the best electric and self-driving car in 2021.
Here is a video where you can see a self-driving car in an application,

Sofia (Social Humanoid Robot)

Sofia (Social Humanoid Robot)

Sophia is a social humanoid robot developed by a Hong Kong-based Company named Hanson Robotics.

Sophia was activated on February 14 2016 and made her appearances in many reality shows.

By amazing collaboration of Computer algorithms and Cameras see, sustain eye contact, follow faces and recognize individuals. She can process speech and have conversations using a natural language subsystem.

Here is a fun video of Sofia with Will Smith (A well-known Hollywood actor).

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence

There are many advantages of using Artificial Intelligence; some of them are listed below,

  • Error Reduction
  • Reduction of manufacturing cost
  • Increase work efficiency
  • Rational decision making
  • Selfless with no breaks
  • Reduction in accidents related to machines

Why is Artificial Intelligence referred to as a threat?

Many of us refer to Artificial Intelligence as a threat to mankind. We partially agree with you in that statement, here is the reason that why we think that this statement is partially right and not completely right.

Artificial Intelligence is the next step towards human evolution.

AI has countless advantages and applications. But the pace of development in AI and the dependence on AI machines must be controlled for a safe and problem-free atmosphere for Humans.

If these precautions are taken with great care, AI will surely prove to be a boon to Mankind.

But if these precautions are overlooked and we created machines that aren’t in control of humans, it will lead to the destruction of humans.

If we increase our dependence on AI too much we will end up with unemployment, economic crises, and many problems. Poor and employees will face the maximum impact of this scenario.
